The Abandoned Classroom
A project by a team of three 3D artists, Myself, Wyatt Eager, and Sophia Keith, created this project with the aim to make an abandoned elementary school classroom, textured in a painterly style. The room was supposed to be slightly unnerving but not scary, with slight nostalgia.
My main job in this project was furniture/prop modeling, which included but was not limited to, large pieces of furniture like the cabinets and white boards, and small details like the chip bags and art supplies. I used Maya to make my models, handed them off to be textured and stylized in Substance Painter, and the result was the final Unreal Engine props showcased here.

The backstory: due to mismanagement, the elementary school is closed down, one particular teacher isn’t able to find a new job after the closure and ends up squatting in his old classroom, surrounded by the drawings and stuffed animals of his prior students.

The most valuable take away from this experience was working with a group and making sure everyone was on the same page with expectations, timeline, and communication. The largest challenge was keeping the style consistent, in both modeling and painting, requiring an incredible amount of communication between members. The models that brought the most difficulty were the stuffed animals and trash can, the stuffed animals had to be posed well, not too static, looking like they were slumped a bit, effected by time and gravity. The trash can was challenging for a different reason, being the first time I’d used the baking of transparencies to avoid using incredibly high poly models in projects.
