Watch and Learn
I made this watch as a practice piece in my free time over the course of three weeks. This project was an attempt to one-up a previous watch model I had made, and a very successful attempt at that! This intricate chain link watch and pillow stand is a notable step up from the last, a free floating simple silicone band watch.
The most challenging part of this project, was getting the links of the watch lined up and consistent, on both the high and low poly, and thankfully the mesh bake in substance went incredibly well, so the chain line up was successful! The most enjoyable part of this project was making the high poly model, I personally start with the high poly, so being able to see the watch come together piece by piece, even with just the stand. Watching parts of a model come together, and multiple models come together in a bigger scene, is always my favorite part of the process!
• Software: Maya, Adobe Substance Painter, Unreal Engine V
• Techniques: High-poly modeling, PBR texturing, HDRI lighting
Watch Stand: Low Poly - 715 Tris High Poly - 5,486 Tris
Watch: Low Poly - 3,634 Tris High Poly - 12,402 Tris
Since this piece was meant as a stand alone model, not part of a larger scene, I was happy to sacrifice a lower polygon count for excess detail.
Made as a proof of concept and test piece I wasn’t overly worried about Tri count, especially for a stand-alone project, so I did not make it as low as if it had been a piece for a larger scene.
